It’s a wrap! Let’s Look Back at Field Day!

After months of planning, ARRL Summer Field Day 2026 is officially in the books — and what a weekend it was.

If you’ve never been behind the scenes of a Field Day operation, it’s easy to underestimate what goes into it. Securing a location. Deciding what class to operate as. Obtaining a special event call sign. Accounting for every antenna, radio, laptop, headset, and cable. Recruiting volunteers. Coordinating meal prep. Planning media coverage. Setting up a GOTA station and a Skywarn display. Arranging for public greeting and orientation. Organizing camping logistics. And when the dust settles on Sunday, compiling all of the QSO and bonus point data and getting it submitted to the ARRL.

But at the heart of it all? Knowing you can get setup and operate in the event of an emergency – getting on the radio and making contacts-sharing a meal-and catching up with friends you haven’t seen in a while, and making new friends! By the way, we had over 70 attendees!

Saturday morning at YMCA Camp Winnebago started early. Volunteers arrived at 9:00 AM to begin transforming the site into a fully operational, off-grid radio station. Antennas went up, radios were tested, laptops were configured for N3FJP logging, and headsets were checked. Running 3-Alpha this year meant getting three separate stations ready to operate simultaneously — all on portable power.

At 1:00 PM, the operating began. This year we had stations running phone (SSB), CW, and FT8 — and all three saw plenty of action. Operators and loggers worked throughout the 24-hour event, with headsets on and fingers flying. Whether it was the steady rhythm of voice contacts, the classic sound of Morse code, or the digital precision of FT8, our operators kept the QSOs coming around the clock.

During our public open house from 1:00 to 6:00 PM Saturday, visitors were greeted and given an orientation of the site and what Field Day is all about. Guests had the chance to see portable antenna setups, watch operators make live contacts across the country, and learn about emergency communications firsthand.

The GOTA — Get On The Air — station gave unlicensed visitors and newer hams the chance to actually sit down and experience ham radio with the guidance of a licensed operator. The Winnebago County Skywarn display highlighted the critical role that trained volunteer ham and GMRS operators play during severe weather events.

You can’t run a 24-hour operation on radio waves alone. This year we went big with both lunch and dinner. Lunch featured grilled burgers and hot dogs with all the fixings, chips, and salads. Dinner was the highlight — pulled pork, cheesy potatoes, smoked mac & cheese. Sunday morning wrapped up with donuts and coffee before tear down.

Field Day doesn’t happen without the volunteers who give their time — from the setup crew at 9:00 AM Saturday to the tear-down team at noon on Sunday, and everyone in between. Operators, loggers, greeters, cooks, and the behind-the-scenes organizers who pulled it all together — thank you.

Field Day is amateur radio’s biggest event for a reason. It brings together everything we do — public service, emergency preparedness, technical skill, and community — into one incredible weekend. We’re already looking forward to next year.

Building 49:1 Un-Un

A Collaborative Hands-on Club Project

From bare toroids to finished baluns – on Sunday, May 17, 2026 – RARA and the Greater Beloit Amateur Radio Club (GBARC) took on a hands-on 49:1 balun build for an end-fed half-wave antenna. It was a team effort and it was great fun with 19 “builders”.

The Build Team & Pre-build Prep

While at a GBARC meeting, the topic went to “do we want to do another build project this year”, in 2025 we collaborated on a Tape Measure Antenna Build and Fox Hunt and it was great fun. Chuck WD9BB, presented an exciting idea – let’s build 49:1 Un-Uns! He presented his idea and research and was a natural organizer for the project – so off we went! All parts were identified and purchased, the team pre-drilled the boxes, planned for soldering, and testing. We were on our way! Many thanks to team members: Larry AC9GO, Dean K9FLO, Brian KD9QVB, Jimmy KC9GOL, and Greg K9GJN. Special thanks also to Larry K9KZT for securing the shelter!

Build Day

Wrapping of the toroids, mounting into the enclosure, connecting leads to the SO-239s, and soldering! Prepping for soldering was critical!

Testing

Un-Uns were tested and if they didn’t test within spec, trouble shooting and modifications were made to bring to success!

A good time was had by all and the team is already planning for next year!

RARA/GBARC 49:1 Un-Un Building Project

This year’s build project coordinated by the Rockford Amateur Radio Association (RARA) and the Greater Beloit Amateur Radio Club (GBARC) is a 49:1 Un-Un impedance transformer for End Fed Half Wave (EFHW) antenna rated at 100 W. A kit has been assembled that includes everything you need to get started: a pre-drilled enclosure, all hardware, toroid and wire for wrapping.  The build team will provide hands-on guidance for winding your own toroid, which is the key component that creates the impedance match that makes the EFHW antenna work.

The finished antenna will cover 80 through 10 meters for the 80-meter version, or 40 through 10 meters for the 40-meter version. Experienced builders will be on hand to walk you through every step of the assembly. Note:  The kit does not provide the wire you will need to cut for your target band and a counterpoise to match.  While you will need to provide the wire to complete your antenna, you will not need to bring it to the event unless you would like guidance.  (14-gauge stranded wire is recommended and you will need approximately 166 ft for 80-meter and/or 66 ft for 40-meter).

  • Date: Sunday, May 17, 2026
  • Time: Swap Meet & Social at 9:00 AM; Build session begins approximately 12:30 PM and continues until finished
  • Location: Hononegah Forest Preserve (Indian Rest Shelter), Rockton, IL
  • Lunch: A hot dog lunch will be provided after the Swap Meet (or bring your own)
  • To Register:  email Verna W9YUM at w9yum.vs@gmail.com and let her know you plan to attend
  • Be sure to mark your calendar and get registered.
  • On behalf of the RARA and GBARC build team – we look forward to seeing you!
