Rockford Amateur Radio Association
ARRL Summer Field Day
Field Day is amateur (ham) radio’s 24-hour open house. Every June, more than 40,000 hams throughout North America set up temporary, off-grid transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio’s science, skill and service to our communities and our nation. It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills all in a single event. The Field Day Emergency Communications Demonstration has been an annual event since 1933 and remains ham radio’s most popular event.
The public is encouraged to attend between the hours of 1:30 pm – 6:00 pm on Saturday. You can “Get on the Air” at the GOTA station where a licensed, experienced ham will provide an overview and assistance in getting you on the air and experience ham radio. You will see portable antenna setups and radio stations making contacts via voice, morse code and other operations.
You will learn more about Winnebago County Skywarn and the important public service they provide by observing and reporting critical weather information directly to the National Weather Service during storm watches and warnings. These volunteer weather spotters are trained amateur and GMRS radio operators living in the Rockford and surrounding area.
